I rip pages
out of poetry books,
the titles of
Shakespeare
and Plath
and Dickinson
littering the floor
like trash,
and I wonder
if we don't all
wind up stepping stones
in the end.

I love this poem. If you can draw at all, I definitely reccommend trying your hand at illustrating this, because it could turn out to be quite powerful.

I like how you took so few lines to target a very definitive point. As a fellow poet I understand how one could feel so great and write so incredibly, only to be overlooked by others who take what we have and learn to do better.

It is most important that we all remember that not matter how old, forgotten, or uncoordinated the lyrics of a piece may be, no poetry is trash.

My only niggle is this line "for the next great artist"....I feel like it took something away from the overall delivery because we can surmise that you're talking about stepping stones for other artists here.

Otherwise, love it! Simple, concise thought that is quite powerful. And uplifting. :) :+fav:

I love writing about writing for some reason. I think it must be because I reflect on myself often, and writings about writing help spark that and give me interesting insight.

I don't imagine classic authors have been much in the way of stepping stones in my writing career. I wouldn't say I've based my style on then, but they are the foundation for my frame of mind regarding writing poetry. However in some ways, every step I take in my literary career is on those who have come before me. If that's the case, I would love the chance to become trodden upon by generations of authors.

There's a really nice TED talk about how nothing is original. Your piece reminded me of that. I don't think there's any shame in being inspired, reinterpreting. The human experience almost demands that of us - it's those stories that resonate that get retold.

I absolutely love this poem. It's so simple yet 'out there' in the most unique way. I see the strewn pages of these famous writers, etc. as the stepping stones people walk on to help them become the next great artist, per se, by learning from the Masters.

That brings me to this part where it says:

Quote,
"and I wonder
if we don't all
wind up stepping stones
for the next great artist
in the end"
End quote.

You seriously don't know how masterful that excerpt sounds, and your placement of enjambments is very effective and impacting here. I usually don't like 2/3-word long line enjambments; exception to the rule you do it too well in this poem.

It's a brash truth . . . we all become stepping stones. What's one man's talent is another's for the taking, so it seems, and that's what makes this poem's message so powerful and thought-provoking. Then again, that really depends. Some people get inspired and get little ideas here and there while others steal the artist's work entirely, traced line for line or word for word. That's sad.

This is my Favorite poem from you thus far and I would like to feature it in our Group's "Passage to the Extraordinaire" where it will be placed with the rest of the very best.
