First Place:

Second Place:
cyanideit is almost winter
and the air is still humid
with the decay of your lips -
save your breath; there is
no need to speak, no need
to explain to me that
i am clinging to this image
of you i have etched
on the insides of my eyelids
(when i close them it is like
 you are that boy again)
i am a prisoner in my
own porcelain mind
- the thought of falling and
 shattering
 still haunts me -
imagining your glassy eyes
when we kiss.
i will never escape
the fire consuming your bones,
the smoke that puffs out of your mouth
and settles in my lungs, condensing
to ashes.
i was born to hear
the rhythm of your throbbing
heart, but i didn't know
i had the power
to poison your mind.
i was a fool
to think we were eternal.
coastlinethis morning I woke in
the middle of the ocean after
a night of your gentle waves lulling
me to sleep,
you smiled at my wet lips
and heavy eyes and said
never regret this smile, never forget
this joy.
we linger here now, in between
worlds, washed up
ashore.
making the bed, or making love in bedthe thin cotton dress hangs like a white curtain on her body,
sharp collar bones casting shadows on pearly skin.
i can see the soft silhouette of her breast and the
gentle curve of her hips, smooth, strong legs
and beautiful knees. her skin is quiet and quivering
as we tug away our clothes much like the way
she tugs at the ends of her hair when she is thinking.
we fall weightlessly to the bed. she is perfectly tousled,
a pretty picture of luminous eyes and small hands.
our kiss forms a smile as the breeze from the window
lifts her hair to tickle my chest. it is the only sound
but the rustle of sheets and our slow sighs.
how to write the perfect poemthis will be a perfect poem;
it will start with a spark,
something that might come
to mind when lying barefoot
in grass or watching teenagers
on the bus and wondering if
you were ever that stupid,
or drowsy in english class
when the teacher says something
wonderful and suddenly you
perk up, grab a pen and scribble it all
down on any surface
you can get your hands
on before the words run away.
at this point you can start bringing out
bricks and mortar and lay them
one by one - but these are
puzzle piece bricks and you can't
just stick them wherever you
want. maybe you'll find yourself
with a nice little rhyme, but
let's be honest it was probably
an accident. you're constructing
a building. a skyscraper.
a monument that will reach for
the sky and stretch past the
clouds and you'll struggle to get
those very last bricks or stones
up there because it's so high
and you're afraid you might fall.
have someone leave a trampoline
at the base and should you
fall you will sink deep into the
tramp
the secret of lost thingsan old book is
something like a dead grandmother;
silent everywhere but in your mind
